Drive Target
The
Opportunity rover acquired this mosaic of a drive target on Sol 1397
(Dec.
29, 2007). This mosaic, as well as
another one taken along with it, were
taken while the rover was parked at the Lyell stratigraphic layer (named
for Scottish geologist Charles Lyell), investigating the layers of
Victoria Crater. These images aided the Rover Planners (the
engineers who plan and sequence rover drives) in picking a spot where
Opportunity could drive to in order to investigate the next lower layer,
dubbed Gilbert (named for geologist G. K.
Gilbert). The mosaic's field of view is about 30 degrees across and about
15
degrees high.
This mosaic was created using
Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered
here at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a
false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
