This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 1419 (January 20, 2008). Dust deposited on the Pancams during the extensive martian dust storm of mid-2007 still shows in this 5x3 mosaic of the downslope Gilbert area (named for geologist G. K. Gilbert) and the rim and dune field beyond. Subsequently Opportunity drove to the large piece of bedrock in the foreground. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic. Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
