Santa Maria Position Two (left)
This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2539 (March 16, 2011). This vantage point is from the left side of Position Two in a campaign to capture short- and long-baseline stereo imaging of Santa Maria crater to study its structure and stratigraphy. Stereo images can be used to construct a DEM (digital elevation model). Images were also aquired from the right side of this vantage point. A similar long-baseline stereo series was taken from Position One, as well as a short-baseline mosaic from the south rim.
Pancam's 753 nm, 535 nm, and 432 nm filters were used in making this mosaic. Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
