Ringtail  << back to mosaics

Ringtail

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 3317 (May 23, 2013). Rover operations often require compromise between scientific goals and engineering constraints of the vehicle. This was the case in the Ring Tail mosaic, which shows two areas of outcrop near a geological contact. The discontinuous image captures the scientific areas of interest while preserving data volume for other instruments. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
