Vermilion Lake

        This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sols 3165, 3171, 3174, and 3180 (December 18, 24, and 27, 2012, and January 3, 2013). Vermilion Lake is an area of outcrop in the Matijevic Hill region of Cape York. Parts of the rover can be seen in the lower portion of the mosaic, along with the rover's robotic arm (or Instrument Deployment Device, IDD). The arm appears to be incomplete because it was moved during the acquisition of the mosaic. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
