Matijevic Pan

         This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity over Sols 3137 - 3150 (Nov. 19 - Dec. 3, 2012). Orbital observations indicate the presence of clay minerals at Matijevic Hill, an area of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater. This is a view to the northwest, showing much of the loop Opportunity traversed during a "walkabout" to determine areas of interest near the crest of Cape York. To the right side of the mosaic, the flat interior of Endeavour Crater can be seen, and at the lower edge are the rover's solar panels and the instrument arm (Instrument Deployment Device, or IDD). The Matijevic Pan was named in honor of Jake Matijevic, an important and admired member of the MER mission, as well as the Mars Pathfinder (MPF), Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), and other recent JPL missions. While you're enjoying this spectacular Pancam scene from Cape York, take a moment to remember Jake. Those of us who knew him miss his wisdom, his cheery disposition, and his constant technical contributions to our mission and others.
         Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Three versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene, and a stereo anaglyph for 3D viewing with red blue glasses.
