Freedom 7

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2587 (May 4, 2011).  Freedom 7 was the NASA Project Mercury spacecraft piloted by Alan Shepherd in 1961, the first American in space. This crater is roughly 20 meters in diameter. Pancam's 753 nm, 535 nm, and 432 nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
