Rodrigo de Escobar

         This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2529 (March 6, 2011).  The rocks seen strewn across the plains were ejected from Santa Maria Crater during its formation by meteorite impact. Seen from orbit, these rocks appear as one of several linear rays emanating from the crater rim. This ray was named for one of Christopher Columbus's crewmembers, Rodrigo de Escobar. The rim of Endeavour Crater can be seen on the horizon. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
