Haomate

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2484 (January 19, 2011).  This view of the Haomate formation includes two rays from Santa Maria Crater. On the left is a ray of debris named Rodrigo de Escobar; on the right is a ray named Francisco de Huelva. Both of these rays were named for crew members of Columbus's ship Santa Maria. Haomate ("upper land of the middle distance") is a word from the indigenous Caribbean island Taino language. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
