Ripple Banding

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2187 (March 19, 2010). On her way south toward Endeavour Crater, Opportunity took this mosaic showing bands of color in a ripple, seen here in false color to better show the banding. Such features provide information on the formation and evolution of the ripples. The field of view is 16 degrees wide. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
