Ripple Bands

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2127 (January 17, 2010). The view shows patches of bedrock exposed through the Martian soil. Bedrock provides scientists information on Mars' past by showing how rock was formed long ago. Subtle horizontal bands in the overlying dunes can be seen particularly well in the false color stretch. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
