Gentoo
The Opportunity rover acquired this mosaic of an area of overturned Martian soil, named Gentoo, while exploring Endurance Crater, on Sol 207 (Aug. 23, 2004). During a turning maneuver, Opportunity disturbed the soil, as well as the edge of the exposed rock, down several centimeters, providing a view of the soil
beneath the top surface layer. This view covers an area that was near the front of the rover, roughly 30 degrees wide.
This mosaic was acquired in Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at full resolution: an approximately true color rendering, and a false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
