The
Spirit rover acquired this mosaic of an area near the front of the rover
on Sol 1933 (June 10, 2009). Spirit was, at this time, stuck
at Troy, on the western side of Home Plate. This mosaic shows the
light toned soil turned up by the rover's wheels; such soil is thought to be indicative of past water on Mars. The small round
impression near the center of the image is the spot where the Mössbauer spectrometer had pressed into the soil to take measurements.
Part of the rover's deck is seen at the bottom of the mosaic. This mosaic
is roughly 30 degrees high by 30 degrees wide.
This mosaic was created using Pancam's
753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at
full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a
false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
