Cobble Field   << back to mosaics

Cobble Field

The Opportunity rover acquired this false color mosaic of a cobble field on Sol 1648 (Sep. 12, 2008).  At this point in the mission, Opportunity had just climbed out of Victoria Crater and was preparing to head south.  As she exited, she came across this cobble field strewn across the flat area near the top of Cape Verde, as well as her own wheel tracks from previous passes through the area.  Due to Opportunity's dusty front sapphire windows, the right third of the four pointings used to form this mosaic were subframed out to minimize darkening.  The mosaic's field of view is roughly 35 degrees across and 16 degrees high.
This mosaic was created using Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
