Alcatraz

         The Opportunity rover acquired this mosaic of the area named Alcatraz on Sol 1618 (Aug. 11, 2008), so named because of the hardship the rover had in driving clear of the area.  The soil which the rover's wheels turned up can be seen (at the top right of the image), as well as the solid bedrock Opportunity finally drove onto (at the bottom).  The field of view is roughly 45 degrees across and 30 degrees at its highest.
         This mosaic was made using Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
