Nevada

         The Opportunity rover acquired this small mosaic of a flat, tabular piece of outcrop called Nevada, named because it's shape roughly resembles the state, on Sol 1591 (July 14, 2008).   Nevada, seen here as the "rippled" rock just at the surface (not the foreground rock), was a section of deep bedrock that had been exposed near the base of Cape Verde.  Opportunity had gotten about as close to the face of Cape Verde as it could, and began an imaging campaign to learn about the exposed bedrock and layering.  The mosaic covers a field of view smaller than most; roughly 20 degrees across by 8 degrees high.
         This mosaic was acquired in Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene.
