Split Workvolume

The Opportunity rover acquired this split mosaic of the workvolume in front of the rover on Sol 1497 (April 9, 2008).  These images were taken to help the Rover Planners (the engineers who drive the rovers) decide how best to move the rover through the tricky and loose soil.  Also, this mosaic is shown in Vertical Projection, a point of view that shows the image as though one was standing right above it and looking directly down, as opposed to viewing the images from a "rover's eye view" atop the PMA (pancam mast assembly).  The field of view for each section is about 20 degrees across and 30 degrees high.
This mosaic was acquired in Pancam's 753-nm, 535-nm, and 432-nm filters. Two versions are offered here at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to bring out subtle color differences in the scene. Also available is an overhead view of Victoria Crater, showing the rover's approximate location as this mosaic was taken.
