Approaching Gilbert 1

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 1425 (January 26, 2008).   This is the first of three mosacis taken of the Gilbert block named for geologist G. K. Gilbert. Images taken at different times of day under different lighting geometries can reveal different aspects of morphology. This mosaic was acquired by Opportunity's Pancam cameras at approximately 11:27 Local Solar Time (LST). See this view in different lighting, at 13:02 LST on Sol 1428, and 09:37 LST on Sol 1429. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
