This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit on Sol 044 (February 16, 2004). This was taken immediately after a drive to examine the area of the in front of the rover, with the hope that something interesting might be there to do in-situ science on. The science team decided to take some MI (Microscopic Imager) images and do a short 30min APXS (Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer) integration to determine elemental composition of some of the soil in this image (which was named Halo) before driving away the next day. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 482nm filters were used in this mosaic. Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
