Spirit Mound  << back to mosaics

Spirit Mound

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 4502 (September 22, 2016).  Taken late in the day when the Sun's angle was changing faster than normal, the rock faces were nearly parallet to the incident angle of sunlight causing only the red filter to capture the rocks sunlit while the other two filters were cast away in shadow creating the odd effect ass seen in this approximately 118 degree wide mosaic of Spirit Mound imaged previously. Pancam's 753 nm, 535 nm, and 432 nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
