Ripples

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 447 (April 27, 2005).  On her way across the plains between Endurance Crater and Victoria Crater, Opportunity's wheels dug deeply into a large ripple, similar to those shown in this image. The team took nearly 40 sols to carefully extricate the vehicle from this situation, and later named the area Purgatory. The mosaic is about 30 degrees wide.  Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are available below at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color stretch to enhance the subtle color differences in the scene.
