Uphill

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 4318 (March 17, 2016). This view looking uphill shows the bittersweet story of Opportunity's heroic struggle up Knudsen Ridge trying to reach Pvt Josheph Whitehouse. The rover tracks show the disturbed regolith from Opportunity's wheels trying to gain traction on the slopes of Knudsen Ridge before the team sadly decided that it was best to ultimately move on from the area letting her gently descend the slope in reverse. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
