Lunokhod 2 Crater

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 3644 (April 24, 2014). The image shows 6 meter (22 foot) diameter Lunokhod 2 crater off the back of the rover. The Soviet Union's Lunokhod 2 moon rover was the previous record holder for longest travel on wheels on a world other than Earth. It landed on Earth's moon on January 15, 1973. In the lower edge of this mosaic, Opportunity's rear solar panel and sundial can be seen. Pancam's 601nm, 535nm, and 482nm filters were used in this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
