Pathfinder Mound
This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2671 (July 30, 2011). A dark region spotted in HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiement) orbital images taken from MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter), was hypothesized to be a pile of gravel. An attempt was made to image this feature while driving by, but due to a change in elevation, the cameras were pointed too low to catch the upper part of the feature. The base of the purported gravel pile is visible at the top of the image.
Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic. Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
