Tracks

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 2111 (December 31, 2009). After investigating the rock target Marquette Island, Opportunity took this image of the soil she had turned up in her positioning drives. Being able to see just under the soil's surface gives scientists information about the soil's history and how it changes. Each track is approximately 16 centimeters wide.
Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used to make this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
