Dark pit  << back to mosaics

Dark pit

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 1818 (March 5, 2009).  A dark patch in the terrain was spotted in the Navcam (navigation camera) images on the way to Resolution crater. Pancam images were aquired to determine the nature of the "dark pit". Dust on the Pancam optics deposited during a martian dust storm can be seen at the mosaic seams. Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
