Trench

This mosaic was acquired by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on Sol 026 (February 19, 2004).  This image was taken after Opportunity excavated a trench with its wheel. The disturbed area shown here is about 70 centimeters long and 17 centimeters wide. Trenches like this provide a view under the surface layer of soil, which has been exposed to the Martian atmosphere.
Pancam's 753nm, 535nm, and 432nm filters were used in making this mosaic.  Two versions are provided at full resolution: an approximate true color rendering, and a false color rendering which enhances the subtle color differences in the scene.
